There's mobile DJs and then there's mobile DJs !! Up Town Entertainment Pty Ltd has been in Darwin since 2003 providing mobile DJs to functions of all types including birthdays, corporate events, engagement parties, sporting events and lots and lots of weddings!!

We are regularly asked about our range of services and the various requirements of booking a DJ in Darwin so we thought we'd set up an information page to answer some of the questions which we can expand over time as well as outline what we offer within our services.

Mobile DJ Service

Our mobile DJ service is a premium product and our most popular entertainment offering. This is an all inclusive service which includes the DJ , sound system, a wide selection of music and a microphone on a cord. Other items can be hired at an additional cost such as a wireless microphone, lighting, smoke machines, slushie machines and arcade tables.

Requests:

We love requests, even before the event!! Requests are great for a mobile DJ as it gives them a base of songs that they know you would like to hear. It doesn't need to be a massive list of songs, even just 25 - 50 songs is a great start. We're also more than happy to take requests during the function so you never need to worry that you're gong to miss out. Mobile DJs love taking and playing requests because it means that getting the songs that you want and this is really the most important part of out job. We usually find there's one or two songs on a request list that can make the difference between a good night and a great night. So, make sure you have good think about all the songs you'd like to hear at your party and make sure you let the DJ know about them. Don't worry if you forget some of them, we will always have a lot more songs with us than we'll have time to play, if we bring lots of extra songs, we can always play them if they're requested during the night.

Setting Up & Packing Up:

We often get asked about setting up and packing up and whether we charge for either. Good news for you, we don't consider this to be something we should charge for. Our mobile DJs in Darwin have a minimum booking time of 4 hours, there is no maximum time and the hourly rate remains the same throughout (i.e. no penalty rates), as a result we don't charge for setting up and packing up our equipment. As we need this in order to be a mobile DJ we don't feel it's right to charge extra for setting up and packing up time.

MC Services:

A lot of people assume that mobile DJs are automatically MCs, this is not the case. A DJ has a different set of skills to an MC. However this doesn't mean that a DJ can't be an MC as well. At Up Town Entertainment Pty Ltd, we have mobile DJs who are also MCs so if you would like a mobile DJ in Darwin that can also be an MC for your event then please let us know before hand and we can discuss the most appropriate mobile DJ for your function.

Additional Hours:

Because our Darwin mobile DJs do such a great job we often get asked to stay longer than our original booking time which people often ask if this is OK. The short answer is, YES!! absolutely. While we do have a minimum booking time, there is no maximum booking time and our rates stay the same throughout. All you need to do is let the mobile DJ know that you'd like to extend your booking before the original booking time expires that you'd like to extend the DJs playing time and they'll happily keep playing for the additional time. You just need to let them know how much longer you'd the DJ to keep playing for or let them know at least a minimum timeframe i.e. an hour.

It's always great to receive recognition such as this as vindication for all the time and effort we put into our industry. Mobile DJ Darwin - 3 Things You Must Know When Booking A DJ in Darwin

Picture this, you've got a work party coming up, let's say it's your end of year work party. You're the organiser of the event here in Darwin and you've decided to book a mobile DJ to be the entertainment at the event. You call the DJ and the conversation goes something like this.......(ring ring, ring ring, ring ring......)

"Good afternoon Up Town Entertainment this is Peter speaking", "good afternoon this is Vanessa from the Darwin social club, I'd like to book a DJ for our upcoming event end of year party here in Darwin", "great Vanessa, you've come to the right place, I'll just need to know a few pieces of information from you, what is the date, where are you having the party, what are the start and finish times, how many guests are you having and what is the range of ages of the people attending the party?"

The above is the standard information that we ask when someone calls to book in a DJ, Jukebox or Karaoke Jukebox with us. These are the minimum bits of information we need in order to take a booking but this only gives us part of the information we need.

That gets us to the important part, the 3 things you must know when booking a DJ with us here in Darwin.

1. How many people will be attending your event -

This is crucial for us from an equipment point of view. A standard mobile DJ set up can cater to a certain amount of people, usually around 100 or so people. This means the sound system will be perfectly loud enough up to the number of people mentioned. Once you get above this number of guests or if the size of the venue is extreme (large or small) then we would need to cater for that accordingly. While it may seem like DJs just have a standard set of equipment that will be appropriate anywhere and everywhere, this is far from the case. Too much or too little sound can affect things so we like to be quit precise with the sound system we bring for each event. Gone are the days when you need a Mack truck to deliver a sound system, the quality of speakers these days is so much better than it was even just 10 years ago, with just a little bit of information regarding how many guests you'll be having along with information about the venue this will allow us to get the sound system and equipment side of things just right.

2. What are the age ranges of people attending your event -

This is crucial from a music point of view. Now, I've never known a DJ who doesn't over cater when it comes to music, i.e. we always take way too much music to every gig we do. However, we do this on purpose, the mark of a good mobile DJ is to be able to say yes to every appropriate request that we receive. I've always said it's that 1 request that you play which can make the difference between a good night and a great night. Accordingly, you always need more music on hand than you'll ever be likely to play in a 5 hour function, having the extra music allows you to say yes to a request that you couldn't have predicted was gong to get asked for. Functions in Darwin usually have quite diverse groups of guests so it's important for the DJ to be prepared musically for that. If you have a really defined range of ages of people attending your event in Darwin, then that will really help the DJ musically. Of course, we're also going to take requests on the night and we'd love you to submit a request prior to the event, but the more information we have about the guest list and the more detail we have before the event the better it is from our perspective.

3. Playlist, playlist, playlist - The playlist is the key to a successful night -

I know we talk about this a lot but I really do believe you can never hear this too much. If you want your event in Darwin to be a success, make sure you give your mobile DJ as thorough a music list as you possibly can. This means supplying a list prior to the event with 1. any songs that you would definitely like to hear, 2. any songs that you MUST hear, and 3. (this one is actually the most important) any songs that you definitely DON'T want to hear. Here's a reason why the reason why the don't play list is so important, let's say you have a corporate event in Darwin with a 100 people with the average guest age being 40. We can pretty much tell what the majority of the songs would be that would keep this type of crowd happy for the night, e.g. 70s, 80s, 90s and some new stuff. If you didn't tell us not to play specific songs within those examples then we would never know not to play them. If your playlist had 70s artists on it like the Bee Gees, Grease, Tina Turner but you absolutely can't stand Abba, we would need to know this beforehand. That's why the don't play list is so important. It safeguards us against the songs that we'd never know about unless you told us.

Hope that helps and hopefully it all makes sense, the more information you can give us prior to your event, helps to make sure the DJ has all the information required before playing the music at your event in Darwin. Being a mobile DJ at parties is a great fun activity, however the more prepared we are prior to a party the easier it is to make your function flow smoothly from a music perspective.

5 Things You Can Do To Guarantee Your DJ Rocks Your Party

Put Some Time & Effort In Before Your Event & You Won't Regret It!

Great question!!! And one that we intend to answer in this very blog post....

So you've got an upcoming party/engagement/event/wedding on the horizon. You've chosen a date, booked a venue, invited your friends (or at least told them to reserve the date) and you may have even booked the DJ here in Darwin.

Pre-party jobs done right?? WRONG!!!

While the humble mobile DJ that you've booked in Darwin certainly knows his stuff and has great sounding equipment, simply booking a DJ and "leaving him with it" so to speak is not the recommended best practice to guarantee that your party rocks from a musical perspective. We have over 6,500 songs in our song collection and most parties go for around 5 hours on average. With approximately 17 songs being played per hour, that will give you around 75-85 songs being played over the 5 hour period. That's not a lot of songs when you think about it. Particularly if you have 80-100 people at your party and they vary in age. You could reasonably expect to get requests from the 60s through to todays latest hits.

So, as you can most likely see from the information above your DJ will arrive to your function in Darwin with 6,500 songs in his collection plus a great sound system and a fantastic attitude with lots of experience, that's all you need to worry about right?? WRONG!! You've got the basics right now we just need to narrow things down a bit to guarantee the music is the highlight of your event.

That leads us to the topic of this post, "The 5 Things You Can Do To Guarantee Your DJ Rocks Your Party".....

1. Know The Style Of Music You Want The DJ To Play:
That doesn't mean you need to be an expert into all the genre's of music and be able to recite them from back to front. However, just a general indication of the style you want played is really helpful. For example, at a 40th birthday in Darwin the DJ would typically play music from the 70s, 80s, 90s and some recent hits as well. At a wedding in Darwin the DJ would usually play a mix of music that suits the age range of people attending the event, usually music from the 60s to current hits would be played. At a 21st birthday in Darwin the DJ would normally play more recent music mainly from todays latest hits with a mix of some older songs based on people's requests. Information related to the type of party you're having, whether or not there is a theme, the average age of those attending and a brief outline as to the timing of the event is a great start. If you have a run sheet letting us know when there will be any formalities (speeches, announcements, awards etc) that is also really helpful. This information will help us to get an understanding of the type of music that will be most appropriate for your event. When you make your booking a general outline of what music you would like played is a great starting point. We'll ask questions and get you to give us more specifics when we speak with you or meet you in person but an outline is a good place to start.

2. Provide Us With A List Of Songs That You Would Like To Hear Prior To Your Party:
While we are extremely capable at what we do and have vast amounts of experience DJing at all sorts of parties and events in Darwin, what we are not is mind readers!! So it's a really great idea if you give us a list of songs that you would like to hear at your party. It doesn't need to be 100s of songs in length, just 25 or so songs that you would love to hear during the night at some stage, this will give us a great idea of your taste in music. This way we have a base of music to work from, we can also read the crowd and take requests. Your list of songs gives us a roadmap from which we can build your playlist for the duration of your event.

3. Provide Us With A List Of Songs That You DEFINITELY Don't Want Played:
Sometimes this can be the most important list of all. For example, if you tell us that you like 70s music but you don't mention that you really don't like the Bee Gees then there is no way we will know this. Chances are, we are going to play the Bee Gees unless we know that you don't like them and you don't want them played. This also helps us with handling requests particularly if someone comes up and asks for one of the songs on your "don't play" list. If this happens we'll be prepared and we can steer the requester in another direction as diplomatically as possible.

4. Be Specific:
Rather than just putting general music genres on your list i.e. 70s, 80s, 90s etc, it's best if your request list has either artists or song titles on it. For example, if you like Kylie Minogue but you don't care which one of her songs we play then you can just put Kyle Minogue on the list, however if you like Avicii's Wake Me Up but none of his other songs then ask for that song specifically. This way we can play the exact songs and artists that you like. The more specific, the better it will be for your music selection on the night.

5. Let Us Know If You'd Like Us To Take Requests Or Not:
Our Director, Peter Gowers has been in the industry for 30 years and he's always telling us that throughout his career as a DJ here in Darwin, and also in other parts of Australia and overseas where he has worked, some people like you to take requests and some people don't like you to take requests. You just need to tell us which camp you fit into. We don't mind either way. If we know prior to the event it just helps us to be prepared to deal with it during your event. If you don't want us to take requests then we will generally discuss music with you prior to your party to get a more specific idea of the music you do and don't want played during your party.

Bring On The Dry.....(That's The Dry Season For Any Southerners Who May Be Reading This!!)

Finally, no more cyclones, monsoons, rain or humidity (well there's a bit less humidity anyway)

So it looks like we've finally finished with the wet season and the dry season "appears" to be up on us. The mornings are a little more crispy (just a little at this stage), the dragons flies are awakening from their slumber, the nights seem to be just that little bit cooler and the Mindil Beach Markets are on again. Far be it for me to be officially declaring the dry season open for business but I'm confident the cyclones, monsoons and storms are behind us for this half of the year anyway!

So with the cooler, drier weather comes the dry season events such as weddings, outdoor festivals, sporting events and the plenty of outdoor markets that Darwin has to offer. We here at Up Town Entertainment are gearing up for another big dry with lots of bookings for Wedding DJs, Jukeboxes, Karaoke Jukeboxes, PAs and Slushie Machines, it's really shaping up to be a cracker season by all accounts.

Given that there are so many events held outdoors in Darwin this time of year and in many cases with limited or no mains power available I thought it would be a good idea to let you know that we hire battery operated PAs which are perfect for wedding ceremonies and any type of event with up to 150 people. Our battery operated PAs include a wireless microphone, USB plug or a phone cable so you can play mp3s through them as well. Well it's well and truly upon us again, the Christmas party season has commenced and it's kicking along nicely. The Christmas party market has changed a lot over the years as businesses are now more focused on OH&S and in some cases their bottom line.

When I first started DJing, the Christmas party season used to start in October, it would kick off with gusto and go all the way through to Christmas Eve. Nowadays it's more like a steady build up throughout November with some frantic activity in December and then everything seems to slow right down for a few months as people recover from the year that was.

Karaoke seems to be back in favour this year with lots of bookings coming through at the moment for Karaoke Jukeboxes for end of year parties. Our very popular Jukeboxes are also being heavily booked along with various other hire items such as PA's, microphones and disco lights.

Get Your Entertainment Organised Now So You Don't Miss Out...

I can't believe I'm about to say this......but Christmas is only 10 weeks away!! Amazing how quickly time goes past, last Christmas only feels like a few months ago.

Anyway, with Christmas only 10 weeks away that means we're just about to hit the Christmas party season, which seems to get longer and longer each year.

If you haven't booked any entertainment for your work or personal Christmas party as yet I recommend you get on to it. Every year we have to disappoint people who leave things too late on certain dates when we get booked out. Given the limited amount of weekends between now and Christmas there's only a certain few weekends left and we find that everyone wants to book on 2 or 3 of those so inevitably people miss out.

The other thing you need to decide is what type of party you're going to have as this will then help you to decide what type of entertainment to book.

In Darwin, most people tend to book a Mobile DJ or a Jukebox as these are the best way to entertain people and they also give you the most flexibility. Other favourites that we offer are Karaoke machines, Slushie Machines and PA systems where people can plug in an iPod or a phone and play their own music for those with a limited budget.

Great Option If You're On A Budget

Having been in the entertainment business now for over 25 years and seeing the benefits of having a DJ run the entertainment for you I know the benefits this brings to any birthday, corporate event or wedding. However, having a DJ is not the only option that you have available to you and depending on the nature of the event there may be some great alternatives.

One of those alternatives which we find is very popular here in Darwin is to hire a Jukebox. A Jukebox comes pre-loaded with thousands of songs that will have something on offer for everyone's music tastes. The two biggest benefits I believe for hiring a Jukebox are 1. they are quite a lot cheaper than hiring a DJ and 2. they are a more passive option for when you're wanting good music but you're not necessarily wanting your guests to feel under pressure to get up for a dance.

Our Jukeboxes have over 6,500 songs loaded on to them and they have music from the rock n roll era through to todays latest hits and everything in between. They have volume control so you can play quiet music earlier in the night and then later on you can turn them up if people want to have a dance or sing along to some old favourites. In addition, they also have a karaoke function for the more serious singers if you want to go down that path.

I've found that the Jukebox option is a good one for corporate events and more informal occasions where the music is being used to compliment the evening and not necessarily be the "headline act" if you know what I mean. Our Jukeboxes also have the capability to plug in a microphone which you can use for speeches or announcements throughout the night.

Why Give Us A List Of The Songs You Like & Dislike?

Prior to all functions we always ask our clients to supply a list of songs they would like to hear at their function and also (often more importantly) a list of songs they definitely don't want to hear!!

I was recently asked why we do this as being professional DJs "wouldn't you already know what to play"?

The short answer is of course we know what to play, but sometimes it's the one or two songs that a particular group of friends love to dance to that can make all the difference between a good party and a great party. Usually it's a couple of songs that wouldn't be obvious to us to play that can really lift the energy in a room.

We ask for a list of around 50 songs which you can email to us, write down and bring on the night or tick from our provided music list prior to your event. The list also will give the DJ a starting point to kick things off with and a reference point as to the styles that you want to hear.

When putting your list together don't forget about your background music, this is often left out when people put their list together and it's really just as important as the dance music as background music lays the platform for the rest of the night.

Lastly, don't forget to think about the guests attending your event, it's great that you love to listen to thrash metal but I'm pretty sure grandma and grandpa won't appreciate listening to it at a wedding. You need to play music appropriate for your function. It might sound obvious but you'd be surprised what we get asked to play sometimes!!

I once had a wedding couple ask me to play Tool and similar artists all night and then wonder why their guests didn't dance....hmm...let me think about that for a minute.....because you requested anti-social, non-melodic rubbish.

Most often we get music lists containing a really nice mix of popular hits that appeals to a wide range of guests which is perfect, just don't forget about the 1 or 2 special songs that will make your night one to remember.

This is the first blog post for the year as there has been so much going on, I can't believe it's June already!!

With the dry season now upon us and as we wake up to those nice cool breezes each morning there's now many people planning birthday parties, corporate events and weddings among other things.

One thing that has really struck me in recent times is how many options people now available when arranging an event, such as venues, decorators, party hire equipment, event co-ordinators, caterers and yes, even entertainment (Mobile DJs, Jukeboxes, Karaoke, PA Hire to name a few).

And while it may appear from the outside that each provider is as capable as the next, sometimes it's worth doing a little digging before you take the leap of faith to making a booking.

In the entertainment sphere we've had many changes in recent times, from equipment (analog to digital), playout systems (CD's, records etc to digital, with mp3 being the most popular) as well as how we consume our media these days, which affects peoples knowledge and access to new music in a really good way.

When it comes to booking entertainment I recommend at the very least having a conversation prior to making a booking. While it's easy to make an online enquiry and to arrange things via email there's nothing better than discussing what you're looking for in detail as a part of your booking process. If the DJ knows exactly what you like and dislike in advance of your event this makes it so much easier for things to go smoothly. Particularly with weddings you don't really want to leave this to chance.
